Definition Of Liposuction

Posted on 11th July, 2009

Liposuction is the removal of additional body fat that is sucked out with specialized surgical equipment. This is ordinarily accomplished by a cosmetic surgeon. It can be better depicted as a way of taking out fat from certain areas of the body.

This can be done on the abdomen, thighs, chin, flanks, the upper area of the knees, the neck, and the underarms. Nearly every area that has fat below the skin can be put to liposuction.

With the removal of excess body fat, a person’s appearance improves. Breasts, buttocks, abdomen, and the face are common areas where liposuction can be performed.

Known also as suction lipectomy, lipoplasty or liposculpture, liposuction has become an easy way to retain one’s youthful looks. It can be availed by almost everyone who has problems with subcutaneous fat. The foremost reason why people undergo liposuction is for cosmetic purposes. They want to eliminate “love handles”, unsightly fat bulges or an abnormal chin line.

Liposuction can be performed on patients regardless of age. But good results are seen in people with elastic skin. The younger the skin, the better the result.

A note of caution: liposuction won’t correct generalized obesity. People mistakenly think they get leaner after the operation. This isn’t the case though it assists people with certain obesity problems or people who have been living on calorie-restricted diets for ages. In most cases, liposuction just takes away unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. It will not make you thinner.
